OjO Latino: Paisaje

 Como puede verse en las ocho fotografías de la sección “Paisaje” de la exposición OjO Latino: Fotografía para la inclusión de la comunidad, las discusiones en grupo del proyecto OjO Latino tuvieron lugar en el invierno de 2016-2017. Respondiendo a la pregunta “¿qué significa ser latino en Pittsburgh?”, la mayoría de los participantes y fotógrafos (latinos radicados en Pittsburgh) reflexionaron sobre las condiciones del invierno, un ambiente que les es ajeno. Para algunos, este era su primer invierno y su novedad les valió una fotografía. Otros, independientemente del tiempo que han pasado en la ciudad, todavía ven en los cambios de estaciones una fuerte característica de su vida en Pittsburgh en donde las bajas temperaturas evidencian limitadas interacciones sociales. La mayoría de las fotografías presentadas en esta sección dan cuenta de la nieve acumulada en las ramas de los árboles y en las carreteras, así como de los cambios en el paisaje de sus propios barrios. Sin embargo, no todas las fotografías en “Paisaje” reflejan el invierno, como puede verse en la fotografía de Teresa García del Strip District y los edificios del centro de Pittsburgh. Al capturar el mural de la cabeza de un león, Teresa fotografió el paisaje que ve diariamente en su camino al trabajo y enfatizó la importancia que ella le da a este colorido mural que la alienta cada día y le da la bienvenida en una ciudad en la que no habla el idioma. 

OjO Latino: Landscape

As can be seen in the eight photographs of the “Landscape” section of the exhibition OjO Latino: Photography for Community Inclusion, group discussions of the photographic and community engaged project OjO Latino took place over winter 2016-2017. Responding to the question “what does it mean to be Latino in Pittsburgh?,” most of the participants and photographers –Pittsburgh-based Latinos– reflected on the conditions of winter, an environment foreign to them. For some, this was their first winter and thus its novelty was worth a photograph. Others, regardless of their time in the city, still see the seasonal changes as a characteristic of their lives in Pittsburgh where cool temperatures evidence limited social interactions. Most of the photographs displayed in this section offer a visual account of snow accumulated on tree branches and on the side of the roads, and the changes of the now-familiar landscape of their own neighborhoods. However, not all photographs on “Landscape” turn around the visual image of winter, as exemplified by Teresa García’s photograph of Pittsburgh’s Strip District and downtown skyline. Capturing the mural of a lion’s head, Teresa photographed the landscape she encounters daily on her way to work, emphasizing the significance of encouragement she gives to this colorful mural that welcomes her daily in a city where she does not speak the language.
