OjO Latino: Costumbres

OjO Latino: Customs

Reflecting on the question “what does it mean to be Latino in Pittsburgh?,” Pittsburgh-based Latino participant-photographers of the project OjO Latino emphasized on the preservation of their cultural traditions while constantly adapting to new modes of living. In the section “Customs” of the exhibition OjO Latino: Photography for Community Inclusion, religious affiliations, home food, and traditional celebrations take a prominent role. Latinos expressed that holding to these customs is a way to keep current the links to their countries of origin that allow them to cope with the harshnesses of the process of immigration and adaptation to a foreign culture. Maintaining alive their customs offers them opportunities to approach other Latinos in similar circumstances and create community support networks. In order to show the relevance of community engaged public services, Roberto Hernandez photographed the parking lot of a Pittsburgh Goodwill, where he enrolled in weekly English classes as a way to prevent depression. With his photograph, he underlined the importance of recurrent gathering activities as key sites of encounter that allow immigrants to counterbalance isolation.
